Make a Difference Day - Friday 23rd October 2009

photo

We took part in our third Make a Difference Day in October with the children all working together to tidy up the local community. The children worked at the Pre Schools and helped the local Housing association as well as planting bulbs throughout the town and cleaning the church brasses.

Ellie entered a competition with Heart FM and her Christmas design was chosen as the winner. She won a Christmas tree from Endsleigh Garden Centrefor our school which she decorated with her friends and the Heart Angels.

September 2009

In September we opened our new Adventure Play Area. The children were fascinated to watch the equipment being installed and we held an official opening (unfortunately in the pouring rain) to mark the occasion. The children now use it every day and we would like to thank FOBS and a local charity for their generous support with this project.

Bude 2009

We all had a great time in Bude in June. The children really threw themselves into all the activities. They climbed and abseiled, canoed down Bude canal and body boarded at Widemouth Bay; they also learnt how to fence, went swimming, played sports and showed some unusual dance moves at the disco!

They loved spending time in their mobile homes and the food went down really well with everyone. All in all it was a great success and the children were a real credit to Buckfastleigh. Thanks once again to FOBS for funding the coach travel.

Summer 2009

The children have had a great summer and have been thinking about being safe in the sun by wearing sun hats.

Our vegetable patch

In the Summer Term we set up our school vegetable patch.  The raised beds were built by one of our dads and the top soil was supplied by one of our mums... a real community effort!

We have had lots of success in our first term with runner beans, lettuce, tomatoes and courgettes to name but a few!

Make a Difference Day 2009

The children worked well on Wednesday 15th July when we took part in our second Make a Difference Day.  Throughout the day the children worked well together and got a lot of jobs done. They helped at Pre-School, Little Ducklings and the church as well as clearing and weeding at The Valiant Soldier and planting at the Millennium Orchard.

Handball Tournament

Buckfastleigh Handball team played an amazing game of Handball against Ilsington Primary School.  Both sides were very strong, showing great skills and team work.

With 2 minutes to go the score was 4-4!  Buckfastleigh keeper Ryan Carter had saved many goals.  Tom Close, Tilly Woods and Estha Rolls played an amazing midfield game.  Chloe Ousby in the final minute threw the ball towards the goal with a great shot that scored the winning goal, just as the whistle blew!
5-4 to Buckfastleigh Primary!

Our playground train and boat

We are working with FOBS to improve the playground and have had our boat and train painted. They both look really bright and colourful. The children loved watching them being painted. All of FOBS fundraising efforts are going towards improving the outside space and there are lots more improvements to come…!

Everest

Buckfastleigh Primary School famous around the world!  Governor Gilly Simpson recently went to Everest Base Camp and proved that whilst she was a long way from home Buckfastleigh Primary School was very much in her thoughts.

Football Tournament

On Wednesday 25th February we took a team of Year 6 boys and girls to a tournament at South Dartmoor Community College. We came runners up in our group and qualified for the finals where we finished an impressive third out of eighteen local schools!  The children really did the school proud with their efforts, enthusiasm and attitude, and skills in abundance.

Well done to all of you!

We participated in Make A Difference Day on Friday 24th October 2008 and we have produced a booklet about the day.

On Friday 24th October we took part in Make a Difference Day. This is an event organised by the CSV which encourages organisations to get involved in community projects.

The children were organised into mixed age groups and were given a range of tasks including the following

  • Clean the church brasses
  • Help with reading at Pre School
  • Clear Pre School garden area
  • Plant bulbs around the school
  • Create a school garden in the Millennium Orchard
  • Clear weeds around the Valiant Soldier Museum
  • Plant hanging baskets in the school grounds
  • Design a poster for the church club
  • Create works of art to brighten up the school
  • Paint murals for the playground
  • Bake cakes and biscuits for the workers!

One of the groups was given the task of cleaning the church brasses. By the time they had finished, they were gleaming!

The church brasses had never looked better!

It was hungry work, so the children made lots of biscuits and cakes to keep all the workers going

We were given the task of creating a new flower bed in the Millennium Orchard. We dug it over and then started planting. We will now look after the bed all year round.

We also weeded and planted in the school grounds.

The children helped to create new murals to brighten up the playground and also painted the sand tray.

Throughout the day, Graham Turner (Lewin and Joe’s Dad) designed and built an amazing shelter in the back playground. The children loved watching a craftsman at work…

We tidied and reorganised the PE equipment and cleared the school fence to help our neighbours

FOBS funded some plants for the hanging baskets and the children planted them up to give us some winter colour.

Throughout the day, lots of parents and members of the community helped us to make a difference.

Throughout the day, the older children helped the younger ones in all the activities

We worked hard to clear lots of weeds by the Valiant Soldier Museum

During the day, some of the groups cut their own pumpkins. One ended up on Mr Banwell’s chair at the end of the day!
